Bio & Experience

Brenda Cude has had an extended career as an educator, researcher, and consumer advocate.  As a university professor her focus has been consumer decision-making and financial literacy as well as guiding undergraduate and graduate student researchers.  As a researcher, her primary work has been on financial literacy as well as how consumer information, including information presented as a disclosure, impacts consumer decisions.  Her primary work as a consumer advocate has been as an advisor to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), where her focus has been plain language and consumer insurance information and education.

Cude earned a Ph.D. from Purdue University.  Since 1998, she has been a professor of consumer economics at the University of Georgia, a Professor Emeritus since 2021.  Since 1994, she has served as a Consumer Representative and board member of the NAIC’s Consumer Participation Program.  From 2013 to 2017, she was a member of the Editorial Board of The Journal of Insurance Regulation.  Since 2014, she has held editorial or advisory positions on the Journal of Consumer Affairs, most recently as Executive Editor.  Cude has numerous publications, including more than 60 articles published in refereed journals, and has received many awards for research and teaching.  You can learn more about Cude’s career here.
