Harold Alan Pincus, M.D., has had an extensive career in psychiatry, healthcare management, policy, and research. As a university professor, his work has focused on the intersection of mental health, aging, and health and science policy, while also guiding students, residents, and fellows in behavioral health and translational research. He has mentored hundreds of young investigators and faculty, contributing to the development of leaders in his field. His research interests include evidence-based medicine, quality measurement, the integration of behavioral health and primary care, and mental health policy, with over 500 publications and significant external funding for health services and policy research.
Dr. Pincus is a Professor of Psychiatry and Healthcare Management and Policy at Columbia University, Co-Director of the Irving Institute for Clinical and Translational Research and National Director of the Health and Aging Policy Fellowship. He also serves as a Senior Scientist at the RAND Corporation, and adjunct professor at Weill-Cornell, UCLA, and USUHS. His previous roles include Director of the RAND-University of Pittsburgh Health Institute and Executive Vice Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh. He has directed several influential national programs, including those funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the John A. Hartford
Foundation. He was also the Deputy Medical Director of the American Psychiatric Association and founding director of its Office of Research.
Dr. Pincus has served on numerous editorial boards and committees, including for the American Psychiatric Association and the World Health Organization (WHO). He has led several major health policy and services research projects, including evaluations of veterans’ mental health services and post-Katrina primary care/behavioral health integration.
